**Read FAQ's below for more information. Our providers are very selective and do not start off with stimulants unless you have been previously prescribed stimulants, verified through prescription monitoring system.
Our providers approach stimulant prescriptions with great caution due to the controlled status and potential for misuse and diversion. We do not prescribe stimulants unless there is clear, verified evidence of a prior prescription. For children and adolescents, we require documented psychological testing or previous documented diagnosis to resume ADHD care. All new patients are first evaluated for alternative treatments including non-stimulant medications and holistic strategies, which may be equally effective and better tolerated for many individuals.
No. If you haven't used stimulant medications before, we may start you with non-stimulant options or holistic supports to help manage your symptoms. This approach reflects our commitment to safety, minimizing addiction risk, and personalizing treatment. Stimulants are considered only after careful evaluation and when other options have not provided adequate relief.
Yes, definitely. Our providers are required to verify all stimulant prescriptions through California's prescription monitoring system called CURES, to ensure that no overlapping or duplicate prescriptions exist. This is part of our strict safety policy. CURES is checked not only during initial evaluation, but also during each subsequent appointment if you are prescribed stimulant or controlled medications. This is to ensure that there is no duplication of prescriptions and you are not seeking ADHD treatment elsewhere and being prescribed stimulant medications simultaneously. Providers also routinely check to ensure that you are not being prescribed controlled medications to curtail symptoms that are caused by stimulant medications such as anxiety and insomnia. Our providers are extremely cautious about practicing polypharmacy and prescribing controlled medications for ADHD when there are non-stimulant/non-controlled medications that may help with ADHD symptoms. The providers use their discretion to discontinue medications if mental health symptoms are exacerbated by stimulant medications.
Absolutely not! We never prescribe stimulants "blindly." These medications, especially Adderall is considered as END-OF-LINE treatment options and only considered after a thorough assessment and trial of alternative or non-stimulant options or modalities. We prioritize patient safety, stability, and long-term success.
No. We don't require drug testing for patients who are on non-stimulant medications. We perform occasional urine drug testing for patients who are prescribed controlled/stimulant medications to ensure safe use of medications and absence of substance misuse. Positive drug screens for the medications allows us to gauge whether the patient is compliant to medications and that controlled stimulant medications are not being diverted to someone else.
Positive drug screens for illicit or non-prescribed controlled substances result in immediate discontinuation of all controlled prescriptions and possible discharge from care. We do consider case-by-case factors before discharge from care. The main concerns are the following: Additive effect of illegal stimulants when taking prescribed stimulants simultaneously, taking marijuana or benzodiazepines or hypnotic medications to curtail the side effects of prescribed stimulant medications.
Yes. We host a dedicated ADHD Clinic every Saturday from 10AM to 1PM as a requirement of continuation of controlled stimulant medications. These appointments are primarily virtual check-ins each month, besides the required in-person visits every 6 to 12 months for active monitoring and documentation pertaining to the Ryan Haigh Act compliance.
If these requirements are not met in and there are no monthly visual/virtual checks or in-person evaluation, we will pause prescriptions of controlled medications until the patient is re-evaluated. This is essential to ensure safe and continuous care.
If you miss your appointment, you can log in during the following week for the next drop-in clinic for your prescription. ADHD medications are not considered life-sustaining medications and you will have an opportunity to be seen during the next drop in clinic the following week instead of waiting for another month.
We do not issue prescriptions daily or on demand. We respond to secure messages within 72 hours. but all patients who are prescribed controlled medications are expected to attend regular clinic check-ins on Saturday to ensure timely refills and ongoing strict clinical oversight and assessment. If you request a stimulant medication, you will be asked to wait until the weekend so virtual face-to-face or in-person face-to-face check-in is possible for continuation of treatment.
